Microsoft has confirmed what will happen when you sell or lose an Xbox game disc after claiming digital entitlement.
peaking to GamerTag Radio at Gamescom, Jason Ronald, Xbox’s Vice President of Next Generation, provided several details about the upcoming disc-to-digital feature that were not explained in Xbox’s initial announcement. He confirmed that the digital license is tied to the physical disc. Players who insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a console and claim the digital entitlement can play the game without the further need for the disc.
According to Ronald, once the entitlement has been claimed, “that digital entitlement is tied to your account.” The physical disc serves as the key that initially establishes the digital entitlement, while the entitlement remains on the account afterward.
However, the entitlement doesn’t become permanently independent of the physical copy. Ronald explained that players should hold on to their discs because “the digital license is actually tied to [it].” If the disc is sold or gets in the hands of someone else, that individual can claim the digital license on their own account, meaning the entitlement effectively follows the physical copy.
Xbox’s Vice President of Next Generation also offered some clarification on the limitations of the program. The feature currently works with Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, and can be availed on consoles with a physical disc drive. He said that there is nothing to announce for Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs at this time. As for games that are on multiple discs, he mentioned that the system currently identifies games using the primary disc i.e. disc one.
According to Ronald, Microsoft is working with its publishing partners in order to expand the program. He said the feature will launch with thousands of games and that Xbox expects to add more titles over time. Xbox Insiders can begin testing next week on August 31, 2026.
