Xbox has revoked the digital license for Alan Wake Remastered for all those users who claimed free copies via a store exploit.
In a message sent out to Xbox users who claimed free digital copies of Alan Wake Remastered via a store exploit, Microsoft informed them that it has revoked their license due to unintended availability.

In its message, Microsoft informs affected Xbox users that they recently acquired a version of Alan Wake Remastered that was not intended to be available. Therefore, the company has cancelled their order, refunding any payment made, and removing the game from their “My games & apps” list. Microsoft apologized to these users for the inconvenience. They were further advised to visit their account settings to view their billing history.
For those unaware, the aforementioned Microsoft store exploit allowed users to acquire a free digital copy of Alan Wake Remastered by claiming a free trial of Alan Wake 2. Instead of revoking the unintended licenses at once, Microsoft took around a month to rectify the error.
Users who acquired Alan Wake Remastered through the above method are likely disappointed to see the game exit their game library after around a month of being available. Those who also have access to a PS4 or PS5 and were subscribed to PS Plus Essential in July, 2023, already have access to a “free” version of the game.
Alan Wake Remastered is an action-adventure game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The game, originally released in May 2010 for Xbox 360 and Windows, was remastered and released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows in October 2021, and for Nintendo Switch in October 2022. The game follows the story of bestselling thriller novelist Alan Wake as he tries to uncover the mystery behind his wife’s disappearance during a vacation in the small fictional town of Bright Falls, Washington.
