AMD FSR 4.1.2 Brings AI Upscaling to Xbox Series X|S

by Greg Martin

AMD has announced that FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 is now available for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S developers, bringing machine learning-based upscaling to Microsoft’s consoles for the first time. The technology is included in the October 2026 Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK), allowing developers to integrate it into their games.

The update gives developers an alternative to the analytical FidelityFX Super Resolution implementations previously available on Xbox consoles. AMD says the new machine learning approach is designed to improve perceived resolution and image quality, with optimisations developed in collaboration with Microsoft’s Xbox team.

FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 supports both Xbox Series X and Series S, with two different models available. The Full INT8 model provides one option, while the new Lite INT8 model is designed to reduce the performance cost of upscaling. According to AMD, the Lite model is less than half the size of the Full model and requires fewer GPU resources.

Developers can choose between the two models depending on the visual quality and performance requirements of their games. AMD has also released a GDK sample that allows developers to switch between the models during runtime and compare their performance and image quality in the same scene.

Despite their different sizes, both models have the same upscaler memory requirements. AMD explains that memory usage depends on the rendering and output resolutions rather than the selected model, making the choice primarily a balance between GPU performance and visual quality.

The implementation uses the same AMD FSR SDK API available on Windows. Registered Xbox developers can access AMD-signed binaries through the GDK and integrate the technology using the same API headers as the PC version.

The upscaler uses jittered colour data, depth information and motion vectors, while reactive masks and transparency-related inputs remain optional. It also supports the same quality presets as PC, including Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance and Ultra Performance.

AMD has additionally confirmed support for FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld family through AMD FSR SDK 2.4. The technology supports the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A processors using an efficient INT8 model.

Developers can currently test the technology on the ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20 through an ASUS preview driver. The driver enables FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 in DirectX 12 games that already support FSR 3.1 or newer. Support for the standard ROG Xbox Ally will follow in a later update.

AMD recommends native integration through its latest SDK, which is also required to use FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 with Vulkan.

The release means developers can now use a common FSR SDK integration across Xbox consoles, compatible handhelds and Windows PCs. However, the availability of the technology in the development kit does not mean existing Xbox games will automatically receive the new upscaler. Developers will need to implement support in their titles.
