PS5 Has Been Rapidly Outpacing PS4 Sales In Japan As More Stock Arrives

by Ali Haider

PS5 has been outpacing its predecessor in sales as the stock situation is slowly improving in Japan. It has sold through more than half-million units.

PS5 had a lower debut than its predecessor and it continued to sell low, but it was mostly due to stock issues. Unlike the PS5, PS4 didn’t really face any issues with its stock but it suffered from a lack of software which is not the case with the PS5. There have been quite a few games released for the PlayStation 5 from its launch until this month from the recently released Returnal to Demon’s Souls, which is quite popular in Japan.

In the latest weekly sales chart shared by Famitsu, PlayStation 5 has sold through more than 30K units. The lifetime sales are now 689K units compared to 648K for the PS4 once launch aligned.

This is the 25th week for PlayStation 5 in Japan and if we count PlayStation 4 sales in a similar time frame, then this puts the console almost 40K units ahead of the PS4 in its 25th week. This lead was just 14K units in the last week but the gap is slowly widening as PlayStation 5 continues to sell more units.

In the coming days, Sony is releasing Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart while Square Enix will bring their smash hit Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade with new story content to the PlayStation 5. Both of these should help contribute to strong sales for the PS5 that should keep it ahead of the PS4 during a similar time frame.

In their latest fiscal report, Sony confirmed that the PlayStation 5 has now shipped 7.8 million units. It was ahead of the PlayStation 4, launch aligned, with more than 300K units. This makes it the fastest-selling console released by Sony. Unfortunately, due to the global chip shortage, Sony expected the stock issues to last heading into 2022 which could make it challenging to keep the sales momentum.
