Microsoft has announced a brand new feature for the Xbox Series consoles making them able to run some backward compatible games with a 60 FPS boost.
This feature is being dubbed FPS Boost and will be a part of the backward compatibility program in addition to Auto HDR. While it is technically possible to make most games run using this option, Microsoft has clarified that they are not doing it because it can lead to erratic behavior and unexpected issues when playing a game.
Microsoft is collaborating with developers to bring this FPS Boost to more games aside from the initially announced titles that include Watch Dogs 2, UFC 4, and Super Lucky’s Tale.
Here is the initial list of games that will support FPS Boost on Xbox Series consoles. This option can be toggled from the dashboard of the Xbox when running the game. There will be a system update in the future that will implement this choice for every game in addition to Auto HDR.
- Super Lucky’s Tale
- Watch Dogs 2
- UFC 4
- Sniper Elite 4
- Far Cry 5
Microsoft has promised more titles being added to support this FPS boost. Judging from the initial list, we can assume that Ubisoft is a safe bet here. Their game engine on consoles might be flexible enough to support a higher frame rate as evident with two of their games getting this boost. One of these games that can benefit from such a choice is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Origins, both of which run at 30 FPS.
FPS Boost will be available for both Xbox Series S and X.
