The the Ultimate Ninja Storm series hasn’t seen a new installment since Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, which was released back in the year 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and followed by a Switch port in 2020. The game’s story follows the young ninjas Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha as they fight together to defeat the terrorist group Akatsuki in the Fourth Shinobi World War, a conflict between shinobi. Similar to Storm 3, the game employs standard fighting mechanics, but players can alternate between a team of three fighters who can support one another. Boss battles, where quick time events are necessary to reach hidden scenes and hack and slash areas, are another returning feature.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 – Road to Boruto is the title for the expansion version of the game. This version was combined with three other games in the series as Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy and released in August 2017. Both adult versions of the younger fighters and new characters from the 2015 movie Boruto: Naruto the Movie are included in the game.

The gameplay in Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is similar to that of earlier games in the series, which feature 3D arena combat between players. Players can fight on the sides (walls) of each arena, a feature that was missing from the first Ultimate Ninja Storm but is now back. The ability to have one character on the wall and the other on the field is a significant change to the feature; initially, the second player was also moved to the wall to keep the battle moving and the system under control.
