Doom: The Dark Ages Update 4 Adds Enhanced PSSR Support on PS5 Pro

by Greg Martin

id Software has confirmed that Doom: The Dark Ages will receive support for the upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PlayStation 5 Pro as part of Update 4, launching on July 7 alongside the Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations expansion.

The update introduces Sony’s latest version of PSSR, which became available for PS5 Pro earlier this year. According to id Software, the enhanced machine learning-based reconstruction technology delivers a cleaner and more stable image while preserving performance during the game’s fast-paced combat.

The developer explained that image reconstruction plays a significant role in a game as visually demanding as Doom: The Dark Ages, where players are constantly sprinting, turning, parrying attacks and filling the screen with visual effects. The upgraded PSSR system uses information including motion, depth, exposure and sub-pixel sampling to reconstruct a higher-quality image from the rendered frame.

As a result, fine details such as snow, sparks, chains, spikes, environmental geometry and distant enemies remain more consistent during gameplay. The technology is designed to reduce visual shimmer and improve image stability, particularly when scenes contain large amounts of movement or complex visual effects.

id Software says the benefits are especially noticeable in larger combat arenas, where distant enemies and environmental details remain easier to distinguish. Character models, weapons and environmental textures also appear more defined, while effects-heavy sequences maintain greater clarity.

The studio noted that idTech8, the engine powering Doom: The Dark Ages, was built to support a wide range of hardware while maintaining the series’ signature fast-paced gameplay, high frame rates, large battlefields and dynamic visual effects. The addition of upgraded PSSR gives the engine a new reconstruction path on PS5 Pro while continuing to work alongside the game’s dynamic resolution system and temporal rendering techniques.

According to id Software, the technology is particularly effective in Doom: The Dark Ages due to the game’s abundance of high-frequency visual detail, including armour textures, environmental architecture, lighting effects, particles and intricate world geometry.

Update 4 and the Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations expansion will launch on July 7, with the upgraded PSSR support available exclusively on PlayStation 5 Pro.
