EA may be working on a game based on a Marvel IP, according to a new rumor. As for whether this is a AAA project for consoles and PC or a mobile game is unknown at this point.
Speaking during episode 115 of the XboxEra podcast, Shpeshal Nick revealed that EA is currently working on a new game based on a Marvel IP. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have any further details on what the Marvel IP in question may be.
While it’s tough to speculate as to what Marvel IP EA may be making a game on, it’s easy to rule out the existing IPs that are already in use, such as Spider-man, Wolverine, Avengers, Midnight Suns, and Guardians of the Galaxy to name a few. Could it be a game based involving Doctor Strange? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Ardent Marvel fans will remember the the time EA was involved with Marvel was back in 2005 with the release of Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, a fighting game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, and PSP, which tied into the “Marvel Nemesis” comic book series. It was released on September 20, 2005 in North America and October 14 in Europe. It involved a bunch of Marvel heroes, including Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-man, and Wolverine, taking on a brand-new group of super-villains known as The Imperfects. The Marvel Nemesis universe is known as Earth-50701 in the Marvel Multiverse.
The aforementioned Marvel heroes and are pitted against a number of original EA-created/owned characters in Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. The game first garnered similarities to Power Stone, Super Smash Bros., and Ehrgeiz because combat is simplified in order to allow players to focus on mobility. The game had finishing moves akin to Fatalities in the Mortal Kombat series, which could be used if an opponent’s health reached 25% or below.
