Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a 2021 action-adventure game developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix. The game is set in an original universe inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy. The plot revolves around the Guardians’ mission to capture a beast for a collector, resulting in an unintended catastrophe that jeopardizes galactic peace. The player controls Star-Lord, the self-proclaimed leader of the team, and commands other Guardians such as Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot. Key decisions made by the player during dialogue trees influence the relationships between the Guardians and impact mission outcomes.
This game is the second collaboration between Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix, emphasizing a single-player experience with no downloadable content or microtransactions, in contrast to their previous collaboration on Marvel’s Avengers. Marvel worked closely with Eidos to create an original version of the Guardians, incorporating themes of trauma and grief despite the game’s lighthearted tone. The soundtrack includes an original score by Richard Jacques and an 1980s-inspired album by the game’s audio director, Steve Szczepkowski.
