FX Orders Far Cry Adaptation as Limited Series for Hulu and Disney Plus

by Greg Martin

FX has officially ordered a limited series based on Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise, with plans to air the production on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney Plus for international audiences. The show will use the same anthology format as the games, with each season set in a different location and featuring a completely new cast. Executive Producers Noah Hawley and Rob Mac will be spearheading the project, with Mac also slated to star.

The series continues FX’s long-running collaborations with Hawley and Mac, who have created several successful shows for the network, including Hawley’s Fargo and Alien: Earth, and Mac’s work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham. According to FX, the new project will be produced under Hawley’s 26 Keys banner and Mac’s More Better Productions.

Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, commented that the network aims to provide a fresh take on the franchise, noting that Ubisoft granted them access to adapt one of its most recognizable properties. Grad said the prior working history with both Hawley and Mac was a major factor in greenlighting the project.

Mac described the chance to work with Hawley as a goal he’d had for a long time and thanked Ubisoft for giving them creative freedom within the game universe. Hawley spoke about the flexibility the Far Cry anthology model offers, comparing it to Fargo, which also reinvents itself every season. He added that the series format allows the creative team to explore human behavior through stories set in chaotic environments.

The list of executive producers for the project includes Hawley, Mac, Emilia Serrano, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, John Campisi, and representatives from Ubisoft Film and Television. FX Productions will oversee the physical production of the show. No casting information beyond Mac’s involvement has been shared, and no timeline for filming or release was provided.

The Far Cry franchise, which began in 2004, has reached over 100 million unique players, according to Ubisoft. Known for its massive open worlds and villains that drive the story, the most recent main entry was Far Cry 6 in 2021.

Further specifics on the number of episodes, budget, or the creative direction for the first season have not yet been disclosed.
