Sales of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sucker Punch Productions’ 2020 action adventure game, Ghost of Tsushima, have surpassed 13 million copies.
During an interview, Ghost of Tsushima creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell revealed that the game’s sales have now amounted to over 13 million copies worldwide. They also talked about the recently announced sequel, Ghost of Yotei, and how they had envisioned a spiritual successor to the 2020 game.
Fox mentioned that, when the development team started working on a sequel, the first question they asked themselves was, ‘What is the DNA of a Ghost game?’”. They said that it is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan. As such, members of the team took multiple trips to Northern Japan in pursuit of inspiration for the new game’s setting. Over a dozen locations were visited before the creative leads narrowed it down to Mount Yotei for the awe-inspiring view that it offered.
Ghost of Tsushima is both a critically acclaimed and fan favorite title. But it’s also popular with certain well-known developers from Japan. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii recently gave the game a shout out during a radio show appearance, sharing their admiration for it. A film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is also in development. During an interview from last year, movie director Chad Stahelski had confirmed that its script was ready to go after two years of development. He mentioned that, at the time, him and his creative team were very close to getting their act together on the project.
Ghost of Tsushima was released for PlayStation 4 in July 17, 2020, with an expanded version for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, called Director’s Cut, including the Iki Island expansion, released on August 20, 2021. The PC version of Director’s Cut, developed by Nixxes Software, was released this year on May 16, 2024
