Kojima Productions made a surprising announcement today, revealing that Death Stranding will be released on Xbox Series S|X consoles. However, they also confirmed that their studio now holds full ownership of the Death Stranding IP.
In a press release distributed by Kojima Productions, they addressed the release of the game on the Xbox Series S|X and the Amazon Luna platform. The press release also included the statement: “KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS also today confirmed that the studio now has full ownership of the DEATH STRANDING IP.”
The original press release can be viewed here, and it appears to contain the statement intact. In the official press release, Kojima Productions shared its intention to expand the reach of Death Stranding to a broader audience and platforms. With full ownership of the Death Stranding IP now under its control, Kojima Productions has the flexibility to develop future installments or updates independently.
Kojima Productions is currently working on a sequel for Death Stranding, which is confirmed to be exclusive to the PlayStation 5. While an official release date has not been announced, a recent update suggests that the development is expected to conclude in 2025.
Additionally, Kojima Productions is developing a brand new horror IP for Xbox called OD. Furthermore, the studio is collaborating with Sony on a new Action Espionage IP called Physint.
The Director’s Cut of Death Stranding offers an expanded gaming experience with enhanced content and novel gameplay mechanics. Sam Bridges traverses a fragmented United States, tasked with reestablishing communication after the catastrophic “Death Stranding” event. This calamity transformed the landscape into a perilous realm with supernatural entities.
The Director’s Cut edition includes new locations, traversal aids, and combat upgrades. Players can explore the hazardous “Ruined Factory” location, use cargo catapults, ramps, and a stabilizer for high-altitude descents, and learn new melee techniques like the drop kick and the Maser Gun. A dedicated firing range and racetrack provide weapon loadouts and time-trial challenges.
Death Stranding Director’s Cut is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, iOS, and Amazon Luna.
