Zero Escape Creator Kotaro Uchikoshi Explains Cancelled Game and Future at Too Kyo Games

by Salal Awan

Kotaro Uchikoshi, the creator of the Zero Escape series, has clarified his future at Too Kyo Games following the cancellation of his team’s latest project, suggesting that changes in the game development industry driven by artificial intelligence may have played a role in the decision. In a new Q&A shared on X, Uchikoshi confirmed that he remains part of Too Kyo Games while working to establish his independent studio, CRASH KEYS.

Uchikoshi explained that launching his own company doesn’t mean he has left Too Kyo Games. He described the arrangement as branching out independently while remaining connected to the studio and its members. He also dismissed suggestions that he had fallen out with Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka, joking that the two remain close enough to hold pajama parties and drink strawberry milk boba together.

Uchikoshi declined to identify the game that was cancelled after approximately 18 months of development. However, he offered a hint about its potential appeal to his fans, saying they might have reacted with extraordinary excitement if they had heard its title.

He also refused to disclose the specific reason for the cancellation, but pointed to broader changes in game development as a possible factor. According to Uchikoshi, advances in artificial intelligence have made it possible to create games at lower costs, putting pressure on mid-sized developers to find ways to remain competitive.

Uchikoshi argued that studios could face difficulties whether they adopt AI tools or avoid them. He suggested that using AI for tedious tasks might have helped his team reduce development time without cutting staff, leaving the creative work to human developers.

However, he clarified that the project’s budget wasn’t necessarily the direct cause of its cancellation. Instead, he said further cost reductions might have changed the outcome.

Uchikoshi established CRASH KEYS in March 2025 as an independent studio focused on game design, direction, and narrative writing. Following the cancellation, he has been seeking new work opportunities and investment to support the company and its team.
