Mega Man: Dual Override has received its first extended gameplay trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live, giving fans a closer look at its new mechanics, bosses and playable characters. Capcom has also confirmed that Proto Man will join Mega Man as a playable character when the new action platformer launches in 2027.
The game is the twelfth mainline entry in the Mega Man series and will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store.
Proto Man will offer a distinct playstyle from Mega Man, giving players another option for tackling the game’s challenges. Capcom has not yet detailed all of the differences between the 2 characters, but the trailer provides the first look at Proto Man in action.
Dual Override also introduces the Override system, which allows robots to temporarily exceed their normal capabilities. The increased power comes with a drawback, however, as players will suffer a temporary performance reduction when the effect expires. Timing the ability correctly will therefore be an important part of using it effectively.
Players can further customise Mega Man and Proto Man through the new Custom Chip system. Chips can provide additional abilities such as rapid-fire attacks, a protective shield bubble and hovering, allowing players to experiment with different combinations and create builds suited to their preferred approach.
The trailer also introduces Twinkle Girl, one of 8 new Robot Masters appearing in the game. Her attacks are based around fireworks, and as with previous entries, players will be able to acquire special weapons based on the abilities of defeated Robot Masters.
Special weapons will provide both offensive power and additional tactical options, but their use consumes energy. One of the weapons shown in the trailer can unleash a powerful charge attack that also functions as an aerial dash, giving Mega Man another way to move through levels.
Capcom has also teased the possible return of a classic Robot Master. Astro Man from Mega Man 8 can be seen briefly in the trailer, although the company has not confirmed whether other familiar Robot Masters will appear in Dual Override.
Mega Man: Dual Override is currently available to wishlist on PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Steam. The game is scheduled to launch in 2027 across the announced platforms.
