Metro 2039 has received a new gameplay trailer at gamescom Opening Night Live, offering a closer look at the mysterious protagonist known only as The Stranger. Titled Renegade, the 2-minute trailer shows the Stranger infiltrating a Moscow controlled by the Novoreich using a combination of stealth and direct combat.
The footage was captured entirely in-game and provides a glimpse at the dark history and mysterious identity surrounding the new protagonist. Rather than following the Spartans, The Stranger appears to have his own methods as he attempts to navigate the dangers of the Metro and the surface.
The trailer moves between the underground and surface environments, including Sevastopolskaya station and the irradiated remains of Moscow. 4A Games is using its proprietary 4A Engine to create the game’s environments and first-person stealth action.
According to the developer, the footage offers only a small taste of the locations players will explore in Metro 2039. The trailer highlights everyday life within Sevastopolskaya before moving into the much more dangerous conditions found above ground.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch in February 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
4A Games has also revealed the first details of a Metro 2039 Collector’s Edition, which will be available to pre-order later this year. The special edition will include a replica of The Stranger’s battle-worn Spartan helmet, giving fans a physical piece of the game’s world.
Players can currently register their interest in the Collector’s Edition to receive information about when and where it will become available.
