MindsEye developer Build A Rocket Boy has claimed that the action-adventure game has made a comeback and that players have returned.
In a press release published on August 20, MindsEye developer Build A Rocket Boy presented the game’s troubled launch as the beginning of a rebuilding process, rather than the end of the road. The studio acknowledged that the game’s launch was plagued with technical problems, mixed reviews and frustrated players, but argued that a steady stream of updates, fixes and content has gradually turned things around.
The studio claimed that “players returned,” “perceptions shifted,” and Steam reviews “gradually climbed.” It also pointed to the arrival of multiplayer this summer, including Grenade Football and competitive racing, as evidence of its continued commitment.
There is, however, one small problem with that comeback narrative for MindsEye i.e. the numbers shown on SteamDB right now. As seen in the screenshot below, MindsEye has just 26 players in-game at the time of the screenshot, with a 24-hour peak of only 32 players. Its all-time peak stands at 3,302 players, recorded roughly 14 months ago. In other words, the game’s current activity is not even remotely close to its launch-era peak.
The situation with Steam reviews also remains challenging, as SteamDB shows MindsEye at 47.84% positive reviews from 3,309 reviews, meaning the overall reception is still sitting below the 50% mark.
While Build A Rocket Boy may have made progress, calling this a “comeback” seems, at least based on the available Steam numbers, rather generous. Perhaps the most telling line in the press release is the studio’s own admission that “whether those additions become another turning point remains to be seen.” For now, MindsEye’s Steam numbers show that the game is far from the comeback Build A Rocket Boy is describing.
MindsEye was released on June 10, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
