Minecraft was created by Markus “Notch” Persson using the Java programming language. It underwent private testing versions before its first public release in May 2009 and a full launch in November 2011. Notch handed over development to Jens “Jeb” Bergensten. With over 300 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players as of 2023, Minecraft stands as the best-selling video game in history and has been ported to various platforms.
The game features a blocky, procedurally generated, three dimensional world with limitless terrain. Players can explore, gather raw materials, craft tools and items, and construct structures and machines. Depending on the chosen game mode, including survival, where players acquire resources and maintain health, or creative, with unlimited resources and flight access, players can combat hostile mobs and interact with others in the same world. The Minecraft community contributes a wealth of user-generated content, including modifications, servers, skins, texture packs, and custom maps, expanding the game’s mechanics and possibilities.
