Modder Explains Poor Performance Of Armored Core 6 & Elden Ring On PS5

by Muhammad Ali Bari

Modder of From Software games has offered his explanation regarding the poor performance of Bandai Namco Entertainment and From Software’s Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon and Elden Ring on PS5.

According to Lance McDonald, despite Bandai Namco Entertainment stating that the PlayStation 4 Pro build of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon runs at a maximum frame rate of 30 fps at a resolution of 1800p, if you boot up the PS4 version on a PS5 the frame rate is capped at 60 fps, resulting in better performance than the native PS5 build. This had also been the case with Elden Ring, the PS4 version of which did a better job of targeting a frame rate of 60 fps on PS5.

As was also the case with Elden Ring, this will once again lead to fans recommending the PS4 version of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon running on PS5 for the best possible console experience.  As such, it is advised that those picking up retail copies of the game should opt for the PS4 version instead of the PS5 version so that they get access to both versions.

McDonald also mentioned that he recently reverse engineered Elden Ring’s PS5 executable and found that the reason it runs worse natively on PS5 compared to the PS4 version running on PS5 is partly because the PS5 version has received no compiler optimizations whatsoever. He claimed that he is able to demonstrate this.

Previously, it was reported that Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is around 5 times the length of the previous mainline entry in the series, Armored Core V. It was revealed that the game will have a total length around 50 to 60 hours. The mentioned duration comes without context, however.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC.
