New PS5 console packaging includes a notice that informs users about Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision to end physical game discs from 2028.
The notice has started appearing on newly packaged PS5 consoles (via Automatic_Ad1665 on Reddit), making it clear that the company is preparing for a digital-only future for new game releases. While the PS5 blu-ray drive will continue to support existing physical game discs, Sony Interactive Entertainment states that new titles will only be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers.
The notice states, “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” Existing physical PlayStation games released before the cutoff date will remain playable on compatible consoles.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision represents the game industry’s increasing shift on digital distribution. Digital purchases have steadily grown over the past decade, offering more immediate access to games, automatic updates, and eliminating the need for physical media. By placing the notice directly on PS5 packaging, the console maker is ensuring that customers are aware of the upcoming transition well in advance.
The notice also indicates that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision remains firm, and that it will not be reverting its plans due to backlash from those users who prefer owning games on disc or value the ability to buy, sell, and share physical copies. Last month, it was reported that a movement within the PlayStation community had calling on players around the world to take part in a week-long “economic and gameplay blackout” to protest against the company’s decision. The campaign, organized under the hashtag #PSBlackout, appeared to gain traction across social media as angered fans voiced support for a written statement describing years of dissatisfaction with the company’s direction.
