Nintendo has reported its financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027, with hardware sales easing after last year’s Switch 2 launch while software sales continued to grow across both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch 2 shipped 3.82 million units during the April to June quarter, down 34.4% from the 5.82 million units sold during the launch quarter a year earlier. The original Nintendo Switch shipped 660,000 units, a 31.8% decline from 980,000 units in the same period last year.
Despite the year-over-year decline, Nintendo said Switch 2 consumer sell-through continues to outperform the original Switch at the same point in its lifecycle. The company also noted that demand in Japan has remained strong following the May price revision, while annual playing users across the Nintendo ecosystem stayed above 100 million.
Software sales delivered stronger results during the quarter. Nintendo Switch 2 software sales increased 9.2% year over year to 9.46 million units, while Nintendo Switch software sales rose 38.6% to 33.81 million units. Nintendo attributed the growth to strong first-party releases and an improved third-party software lineup.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was the company’s biggest first-party title of the quarter, shipping 7.94 million units. Nintendo also revealed that the game has now surpassed 8 million cumulative global sell-through as of August 5. Pokémon Pokopia shipped 1.27 million units during the quarter, although Nintendo noted that the game is published by The Pokémon Company in Japan.
The company’s software mix also shifted further towards first-party releases. First-party titles accounted for 82.6% of total software sales, up from 64.8% a year earlier, while digital sales represented 61.5% of software revenue compared with 59.3% in the previous year.
Nintendo said continued first-party support remains a key part of its strategy for expanding the Switch 2 install base. During the quarter, the company released Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox and Splatoon Raiders, and confirmed that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Xenoblade Genesis, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are among the upcoming first-party releases.
