Taro told the audience that the Square Enix president was present in the crowd, and he encouraged them to give the loudest applause of the night if they wanted a NieR: Automata sequel to happen. As per the Reset Era member, the hall immediately “erupted into claps, cheers and yells”. It’s unclear whether the NieR series creator was serious about the whole situation, but the message had been conveyed by the fans. Now that both Square Enix president and representative director Yosuke Matsuda and Yoko Taro know that fans are eagerly awaiting a sequel, perhaps it will actually see the light of day in the future.

The Reset Era member also mentioned that, at one point during a story segment, the word “REPENT” was shown repeatedly as part of a dialogue. The final segment of the concert was spelled as “R3PENT”, with the number “3” suggesting that a third entry in the NieR series may already be in the works.

Nier: Automata is a 2017 action role-playing game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. Serving as a sequel to Nier (2010), which is itself a spin-off and sequel to the Drakengard series, Nier: Automata was initially released for PlayStation 4 and Windows via Steam. An Xbox One port followed the next year, with a Nintendo Switch port arriving in 2022.

The game’s narrative unfolds amidst a proxy conflict between alien-engineered Machines and human-crafted androids, centering on combat android 2B, scanner android 9S, and rogue prototype A2. Multiple playthroughs are necessary to fully grasp the story, as each reveals new narrative layers. Gameplay blends role-playing elements with hack-and-slash combat, featuring diverse gaming genres like shoot ’em up and text adventure.
