Nintendo has released Nintendo Switch 2 firmware version 23.0.0, introducing several new system features and improvements. The update adds VRR output in TV mode, although the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock must also be updated to use the feature.
The firmware update also expands Game Chat functionality, adds system transfer support between Switch 2 consoles, introduces Mii QR codes, and provides new accessibility and system settings. Several other quality-of-life improvements and minor stability fixes are included as well.
Nintendo Switch 2 Firmware 23.0.0 Patch Notes
VRR Support
- Added support for VRR output in TV Mode.
- When both the software and connected television support VRR, video output can use a refresh rate synchronized with the game’s rendering process.
- Updating the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock is required to enable VRR output.
Game Chat Improvements
- The list of accessible Game Chats now displays chats you have previously joined.
- Players can start a new chat without selecting any friends.
- Added a Screen Size button to the menu that appears when pressing the C Button during a chat.
Virtual Game Cards
- Added Settings to the Virtual Game Card list screen.
- Players can check the registration status of the console using the Virtual Game Card, among other details.
- When software cannot be moved from another console because that console is offline, players can temporarily launch the software using an Online License.
- A Play via Online License button will appear when the Virtual Game Card cannot be transferred.
- Only the user who originally purchased the software can use an Online License.
System Transfer
- Added support for System Transfer between Nintendo Switch 2 consoles.
- Players can transfer all data, including save data and screenshots, from their current Switch 2 to a new Switch 2 console.
- Added the Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2 option under System in System Settings.
System Settings
- Added Portuguese (Brazil) speech synthesis under Accessibility → Text-to-Speech.
- Added Portuguese (Brazil) to the Text-to-Speech language options under Accessibility → Game Chat Speech-to-Text / Text-to-Speech.
- Under Audio → TV Sound, settings are now saved individually for each connected television.
- Renamed Dock Output Information to Video Output Information under TV Output.
- The renamed option allows users to check detailed information about the video signals supported by the connected TV.
- Added VRR Settings under TV Output.
- Added a feature under Mii that converts Miis into QR Codes for sharing with other users.
- Adjusted the Wake-up Sound When Playing on TV volume control under Sleep Mode.
- A sample sound now plays immediately when changing the volume to preview the selected level.
- Added Quick Settings Handheld Mode Boost Toggle under System → Switch Software Performance Mode.
- When enabled, Handheld Mode Boost can be toggled ON or OFF from Quick Settings by pressing and holding the HOME Button.
- Regarding Handheld Mode Boost, controllers other than Joy-Con 2 can now be used while Joy-Con 2 controllers are attached to the console.
Mii Editor
- Added background music playback to the Mii Editor screen.
- BGM can be switched or stopped using the BGM Settings button in the top-left corner.
User Profile
- Under User Page → Profile, play time for the same software across multiple consoles will now be combined.
- Play time will be sequentially combined and displayed starting with software played after the update.
Other Updates
- Fixed several minor issues.
- Improved operational stability.
Important Notice
- Nintendo recommends updating the Nintendo Switch 2 console only while it is operating normally.
- Modifying the console or using unauthorized peripherals or software may render the system inoperable following a system update.
- Save data created through non-standard methods or unauthorized data may cause system failure, compromise safe operation, or be automatically removed.
- Updating the console under these abnormal conditions will void system functionality guarantees, repairs, and warranty coverage.
