The GeForce 40 series is a family of graphics processing units developed by Nvidia, succeeding the GeForce 30 series. The RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 were released on October 12 and November 16, respectively, following the series’ announcement on September 20, 2022, at the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2022 event. The third-generation RT cores and fourth-generation Tensor Cores from Nvidia are used in the cards, which are based on the Ada Lovelace architecture and offer hardware-accelerated raytracing (RTX). On January 3, 2023, NVIDIA reintroduced the cancelled 4080 12GB as 4070 Ti while reducing its price by $100. A number of mobile GPUs were released as well.
Given previous Nvidia GPU generations and the significant difference in performance and specifications compared to the 16 GB card, numerous publications, well-known YouTubers, reviewers, and the community criticized Nvidia for calling the 12 GB RTX 4080 an RTX 4080 rather than an RTX 4070 when it was first announced. It was implied by the names RTX 4080 12GB and RTX 4080 16GB that the only distinction between the two products was their VRAM capacities.
