Obsession Director Curry Barker Wants to Release an Extended Cut With 20 Minutes of Additional Footage

Obsession director Curry Barker has revealed that an extended cut of his hit horror film exists, featuring approximately 20 minutes of additional footage. While he would like to release the longer version, Barker says the theatrical edition already represents his intended director’s cut.

Speaking in an interview published by Rolling Stone, Barker explained that he was largely given the freedom to make the film he wanted. He also made it clear that he remains satisfied with the version audiences saw in cinemas.

“I think the movie is the director’s cut. I really do,” Barker said. “I did whatever I wanted for the most part. So I would say I’m pretty happy with the cut.”

When asked whether he would change anything about the finished film, Barker said his background as an editor made him comfortable with the final version. Although there are scenes he would consider reshooting, he doesn’t believe anything needs to change using the footage currently available.

“So that is the Director’s Cut, but I would say Extended Cut for sure,” he added, confirming that a longer version could still be released separately.

The Obsession extended cut would add roughly 20 minutes to the theatrical release, although Barker did not specify what additional scenes or material it would contain.

Released theatrically by Focus Features on May 15, 2026, Obsession follows a young man who breaks a supernatural “Wish Willow” in an attempt to win the affection of his crush, only to face horrifying consequences. The horror-thriller was directed by Barker, who is 26 years old.

The film has also become a major box office success. Produced on a reported budget of less than $1 million, Obsession has grossed more than $520 million worldwide. It opened with $17.1 million domestically before recording unusual weekend-to-weekend increases during its second and third weeks in cinemas.

The film expanded to more than 3,000 theatres across North America within a few weeks of release and has become the highest-grossing original theatrical film of the 2020s.
