Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Runs at Stable 60 FPS on Switch 2, With Resolution Reaching 1440p

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake runs at a largely stable 60 frames per second on Nintendo Switch 2, according to a new technical analysis from Digital Foundry. The game also supports resolutions of up to 1440p in docked mode, although its image quality falls short in some areas.

Digital Foundry’s Ocarina of Time remake performance analysis found that the game uses dynamic resolution scaling when connected to a TV. Resolution can reach 1440p but drops to approximately 1080p in more demanding scenes.

In handheld mode, the game operates between 720p and 1080p. Portable play also comes with some visual compromises, including more aggressive level-of-detail settings and reduced texture filtering quality.

The remake represents a significant improvement over previous versions in terms of frame rate. The original Nintendo 64 release ran at 20 FPS with a resolution of 320×240, while the Nintendo 3DS remake targeted 30 FPS at 400×240.

On Switch 2, Digital Foundry found the 60 FPS target to be very consistent in both docked and handheld modes. Only minor loading-related hiccups were observed, and the outlet noted that the stability makes variable refresh rate support largely unnecessary.

Image quality is where the remake shows some weaknesses. Despite Nintendo Switch 2 supporting Nvidia DLSS upscaling, the game instead uses SMAA anti-aliasing combined with AMD FSR1.

According to Digital Foundry, this approach results in some visible shimmering and sharpness issues. The outlet compared the presentation to the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which exhibits similar image quality characteristics.

HDR implementation was another area of criticism. Digital Foundry found it comparable to Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong on Switch 2, describing the results as less than impressive.

The technical analysis also suggested that the remake may be using technology derived from Breath of the Wild, although Digital Foundry could not confirm whether the two games share the same underlying technology.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. The game will become available through a staggered midnight release across different regions, with digital pre-downloads already available. Nintendo is also offering a limited physical edition featuring a textured foil cover.
