Sony Interactive Entertainment is asking GTA V players on PS4 to upgrade to a PS5 to be ready for the GTA VI launch.
According to community reports (via GTAVI_Countdown and videotech on Twitter/X), Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun a new marketing push, through which it is encouraging PS4 GTA V players to upgrade to a PS5 to be ready for the GTA VI launch on November 19, 2026. PlayStation 4 users have been approached via emails registered to their PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts as well as via a “From PlayStation” announcement directly on the console, as seen below.
The official message sent out from PlayStation is titled, “Because you love playing Grand Theft Auto V…”, and it asserts the recipient as a “top Grand Theft Auto V player!” Furthermore, the message asks the PSN user to “get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.” A QR code is provided alongside the message to scan and ship PS5 consoles.
Additionally, emails have also been sent out to PS4 users who have GTA VI on their wishlists and have yet to upgrade to the current-gen PS5 console. The message is titled, “Because you wishlisted Grand Theft Auto VI…”, reminding PlayStation 4 users that GTA VI is on their wishlists, and that they’ll need a PS5 in order to play it come launch day. “Grand Theft Auto VI is on your wishlist,” the message reads. “Get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.”
A recent interview with Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the company has a marketing deal in place with PlayStation. Additionally, he mentioned that the window of console exclusivity for GTA VI isn’t related to the marketing deal, and that the decision was made in order to serve the “core” audience “first and best.”
