The new Pokemon GO update has significantly altered player avatar appearances, leading to backlash from the game’s community.
According to the official Pokemon Go App Twitter/X account, the new update was intended to bring player avatar character models closer to their real life counterparts. However, things didn’t seem to have gone according to plans, and players are left with characters that don’t resemble them at all.

We’ll let our readers decide how the avatars prior to the update compare with their post-update versions. The game’s community is not flattered, however, and some are even contemplating deleting the game from their mobile devices altogether. One player took to Reddit to share that they’ve spent a lot of time and money on Pokemon GO. According to them, the new avatar gets everything wrong. Some of the created outfits don’t fit the updated characters anymore, while others are too “glitched” to be worn.
Pokemon Go was released in 2016 for iOS and Android devices. It is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic, in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. Players use their GPS-enabled mobile devices to find, catch, train, and battle virtual Pokemon in real-world locations. The game uses a freemium model, offering in-app purchases and local advertising to support its Free to Play structure.
As players navigate their physical surroundings, their in-game avatars correspondingly move across the map in Pokemon Go. Various Pokémon species are distributed across different geographical regions; for instance, Water-type Pokemon are commonly found near bodies of water. When encountering a Pokemon, players have the option to view it in either AR mode or against a computer-generated background. AR mode utilizes the mobile device’s camera and gyroscope to overlay the Pokemon onto the real-world environment, providing an immersive experience. Players can capture screenshots of encountered Pokemon with or without activating the AR mode.
