The latest version of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI upscaling technology for the PS5 Pro, PSSR 2, has already received new algorithm updates.
Ivaylo Koralsky, CEO and co-founder of Kyodai Ltd and developer of Truck Driver: The American Dream, took to the gaming enthusiast Reset Era forums to respond to a fellow member regarding the possibility of the PS5 Pro AI upscaler, PSSR 2, getting new versions in the future. In response, he revealed that there are already new algorithm updates available to developers.
It’s worth noting that the aforementioned algorithm updates will not manifest in existing titles via the system-level enhanced PSSR toggle available in the PS5 Pro’s settings menu. This was made clear by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny during an interview with Digital Foundry. However, the image quality in future titles is expected to benefit from the updated algorithms. One such game is likely to be Sony Interactive Entertainment and Housemarque’s upcoming action roguelike game, Saros, which arrives later this month on April 30, 2026.
Last month, after the arrival of PSSR 2, Koralsky shared some technical stats on PSSR 1 and PSSR 2, revealing that the latter takes slightly less render time on the GPU while rendering more pixels. As such, it may deliver slightly better performance in like-for-like scenarios.
Sony Interactive Entertainment released a new PS5 system update on March 17, 2026, bringing the option to upgrade from PSSR 1 to the new PSSR 2 in supported games on PS5 Pro via a new system toggle that overrides the internal version with the new algorithm. The updated algorithm focuses on improving motion clarity and reducing artifacts seen on objects with finer detail, such as fences as well as foliage. PSSR 1 tends to exhibit moire artifacts on overlapping detail and shimmering on foliage. That said, it’s still possible to appreciate the improved quality of finer detail and crisper overall look.
