Resident Evil’s First 10-Year Plan Is Complete as Capcom Teases the Saga’s Ending

Capcom has completed the first phase of its 10-year plan for Resident Evil, with Senior Managing Executive Officer Jun Takeuchi suggesting that the franchise’s overarching story could reach its conclusion within the next decade. Speaking in an anniversary interview, Takeuchi identified Resident Evil Requiem, released in February 2026, as a milestone in the series’ long-term direction.

The plan took shape around the development of the Resident Evil 2 remake. According to Takeuchi, Capcom established a 10-year branding concept at the time, although the story itself wasn’t fully mapped out from the beginning. Each new entry helped shape the larger narrative, making it difficult to bring the different elements together.

Takeuchi, who worked on the graphics for the original Resident Evil in 1996, also reflected on the challenges the franchise has faced over the years. He recalled the limitations of the development team’s early working conditions and the resistance surrounding Resident Evil 4, which moved away from the series’ mansion setting in favour of a rural village and introduced an over-the-shoulder camera.

Resident Evil 6 also faced criticism from longtime fans. Takeuchi described the game as a collection of ideas from previous entries that lacked a fresh identity.

The series found a new direction with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Takeuchi recalled being asked by Capcom’s chairman to take charge of a struggling project, with the goal of restoring the fear that had become central to the franchise. Its first-person perspective helped make the horror more immediate, although some players found the experience particularly frightening.

The latest entry, Resident Evil Requiem, builds on that approach by allowing players to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. The game stars newcomer Grace alongside returning character Leon Kennedy. Takeuchi also hinted at a connection between Requiem and Resident Evil 7, while suggesting that the letter “q” in the title represents the number nine.

Looking ahead, Takeuchi said the story is expected to reach its resolution over the next 10 years. He didn’t specify how many games Capcom intends to release during that period, but indicated that the conclusion would involve more than a single title.
