Resident Evil Code: Veronica Remake Has Been Restarted Multiple Times by RE4 Team

Capcom’s Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake has already undergone two or three small-scale development restarts, according to Senior Managing Executive Officer Jun Takeuchi. The remake of the 2000 survival horror game is scheduled to launch in 2027, with the team behind the Resident Evil 4 remake leading development.

Speaking in a recent anniversary interview, Takeuchi described the project as exceptionally difficult, pointing to the expectations surrounding a game with such a dedicated fanbase. He explained that fans have a particularly strong attachment to Code: Veronica, leaving Capcom with little room to deliver a remake that falls short of expectations.

The repeated restarts appear to reflect the team’s efforts to get the project right rather than continue with an approach that isn’t working. Takeuchi’s comments offer a rare glimpse into the challenges involved in revisiting one of the franchise’s older entries.

Development resets have played a part in the series’ history before. Takeuchi recalled how the team working on the Resident Evil 2 remake discarded its existing work and started again after being asked to reconsider the story. The original Resident Evil 4 also underwent a major change in direction, with a new director taking over midway through development.

For the Code: Veronica remake, Capcom intends to give the game’s events greater significance within the wider franchise. The original follows siblings Chris and Claire Redfield, although Takeuchi said the game had often felt more like a side story than a central entry in the series.

He also hinted that changes introduced across the remakes will become more meaningful as the projects progress. Takeuchi specifically mentioned the opportunity for fans to discover the true side of Spencer, the mastermind behind much of the franchise’s central conflict.

The executive added that the order in which Capcom releases its remakes has a specific meaning for players who experience all of them. He did not elaborate on the details of that connection.
