Silent Hill 2 Remake ESRB Rating Highlights Sexual Themes, Violence, and Playable Weapons

ESRB has rated Silent Hill 2 Remake as Mature (M) due to its explicit content, including blood and gore, strong language, sexual themes, and violence.

Konami is working on this remake of the classic Silent Hill 2 with Bloober Team, the developers behind Layers of Fear and The Medium.

Silent Hill 2 Remake is a horror adventure game that immerses players in the eerie and mysterious town of Silent Hill, guiding them through a narrative steeped in psychological torment and dark pasts. In the game, players assume the role of a man haunted by his past encounters, navigating through the fog-enshrouded streets of Silent Hill from a third-person perspective. The core gameplay involves exploring the town, interacting with its inhabitants, and confronting both human and otherworldly adversaries. Notable foes include the iconic Pyramid Head, disturbing mannequin creatures, and various monsters that contribute to the game’s unsettling atmosphere.

The combat system allows players to use various weapons, such as pistols, shotguns, rifles, and knives, to defend against the horrors that lurk around every corner. The ESRB’s summary highlights the realistic portrayal of violence in Silent Hill 2 Remake, with enemies reacting vividly to gunfire, exhibiting signs of pain, and leaving behind blood-splatter effects. Additionally, the game’s environments often feature graphic scenes such as large bloodstains and exposed intestines/organs, adding to the overall horror experience.

Silent Hill 2 also explores mature themes beyond physical violence. Cutscenes and illustrations in the game depict intense violence, such as characters being impaled or suffocated. Additionally, the narrative includes suggestive and sexual content, with characters performing in strip clubs and dialogue referencing sexual abuse and misconduct.

This is a horror adventure game in which players assume the role of a man returning to a mysterious town while being tormented by his past. From a third-person perspective, players explore the town of Silent Hill, interact with characters, and battle humans and creatures (e.g., Pyramid Head, mannequins, monsters). Players use pistols, shotguns, rifles, and knives to kill enemies. Combat is highlighted by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, and blood-splatter effects. Some environments depict large bloodstains and/or intestines/organs on walls, floors, and surrounding bodies. Cutscenes and illustrations depict further instances of violence and/or blood and gore: characters impaled; a character suffocated to death with a pillow; enemies with body parts sewn together. The game contains some suggestive/sexual material: characters pole-dancing in strip-club settings; posters of women in revealing outfits (e.g., bra and thong, deep cleavage); dialogue alluding to sexuality and/or sexual abuse/misconduct (e.g., “Remember that time in the hotel? You said you took everything. But you forgot that videotape we made”; “Don’t touch me…You’re only after one thing…Or you could just force me, like he always did.”). The word “sh*t” appears in the game.

Silent Hill 2 is currently set to launch for PC and PS5. Konami has yet to confirm an official release date for the game. Earlier, the game had received an update on Steam Database suggesting that Konami might be gearing up for an official announcement soon.
