Studio MDHR Confirms New Cuphead Game in Development

by Greg Martin

Studio MDHR has announced that a brand-new Cuphead game is officially in development, while also unveiling a second project, Mighty Cuphead Adventure, during Summer Game Fest 2026.

The studio confirmed that work has begun on a new hand-animated entry in the Cuphead series. While details remain limited, the developer described it as a fresh adventure featuring the franchise’s iconic characters. The project is currently in the early stages of development, and Studio MDHR said it will share more information at a later date.

The announcement was accompanied by a special presentation created in collaboration with Toronto-based production teams Stop Motion Department and Continue Agency. According to Studio MDHR co-founder Chad Moldenhauer, the presentation was designed to offer a glimpse into the era and style that will influence the studio’s upcoming projects.

Alongside the reveal of the new Cuphead title, Studio MDHR introduced Mighty Cuphead Adventure, a separate project being developed by a smaller internal team. Unlike the studio’s signature hand-drawn games, this title takes the form of an 8-bit action platformer inspired by classic gaming experiences from the 1980s.

What makes the project particularly unusual is its development approach. Studio MDHR revealed that Mighty Cuphead Adventure is being programmed in Assembly Language and built around the technical specifications of the Sega Master System. While the game will be released on modern platforms, the developer also plans to offer a physical cartridge version compatible with the original Sega Master System hardware.

The studio did not announce a release date for either project but stated that additional details on Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be shared in the coming months.

Founded by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, Studio MDHR first gained widespread recognition with the release of Cuphead in 2017. The run-and-gun action game earned critical acclaim for its hand-drawn animation style inspired by 1930s cartoons and later expanded to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The franchise received its first major expansion, The Delicious Last Course, in 2022 and has since expanded into other media, including Netflix’s animated adaptation, The Cuphead Show!.
