Terranigma is officially returning in 2027, with the classic action RPG set to launch on Steam, GOG, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement was accompanied by a new Terranigma Rebirth trailer, giving fans their first look at the upcoming release.
Originally developed by Quintet and published by Enix for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995, Terranigma has never received an official re-release until now. The game takes place across two sides of a hollow Earth, with the external Lightside and internal Darkside forming the basis for its unusual setting.
Players take control of Ark, a mischievous resident of the Darkside village of Crysta. After opening a forbidden door, Ark becomes caught up in events that take him beyond his home and set him on a journey that ultimately changes the world.
Terranigma combines traditional role-playing elements with real-time action combat. Ark fights using a spear and can perform attacks including thrusts and jump attacks, while dashes and other movement abilities give combat a more immediate feel. Enemies also move in real time, requiring players to react to their attacks rather than relying on turn-based battles.
The game originally stood out among 16-bit RPGs for its world-building, combat, music and visual presentation. Its characters were designed by manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, while the game’s soundtrack has remained particularly well regarded for its range of melancholic and upbeat compositions.
Terranigma also features a story centred around themes of creation and destruction. Ark’s journey involves the resurrection of the Earth’s continents, flora, fauna and human civilisation, following the events that begin in his underground home.
The RPG was originally released in Japan on October 20, 1995, before reaching PAL regions on December 19, 1996. It remained exclusive to the SNES throughout its original release, making the upcoming 2027 launch the first opportunity to officially experience the game on modern platforms.
The new release will be available across PC and current and previous-generation console platforms, including Steam, GOG, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series X|S. A specific release date in 2027 has not yet been announced.
