Last year, on February 23, 2023, it was announced by Bethesda Softworks that Shinji Mikami would leave Tango Gameworks in the next few months. It’s unclear whether Mikami will return to the studio to work on a third entry in The Evil Within or whether he would prefer to work as a creative consultant. Nevertheless, he has expressed that he would like to return to the series one way or another. It remains to be seen how Microsoft and Bethesda Game Studios respond to Mikami’s statement.

The previous entry in The Evil Within series, The Evil Within 2, is a survival horror video game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. It launched globally in October, 2017, as a sequel to The Evil Within (2014). The game follows the same survival horror theme as its predecessor, and is played from either a third-person or first-person perspective. Players control detective Sebastian Castellanos, tasked with rescuing his daughter, Lily, from the world of Union. The game’s maps are larger than those of its predecessor, and players have multiple ways to progress through levels.

The “Communicator” item assists players by highlighting objectives, resources, and enemies. It also reveals Resonance points, providing hints about the events in the world of Union. Exploration is encouraged, as the game gives players the opportunity to freely explore areas for side objectives and scarce resources. Combat options include direct confrontation with weapons, such as guns, or stealth to avoid detection, allowing players to eliminate enemies silently from behind.
