The Last Of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Fan Project Has Been Shut Down After DMCA From PlayStation

The multiplayer fan mod for the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2 that has been in the works since January, 2026, has been shut down after the developer received a DMCA request from PlayStation.

Modder and content creator Speclizer_ took to Twitter/X to share that The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer fan project was scheduled to release this month. However, they recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the multiplayer mod not be released.

According to the modder, the project only planned to feature PvP and no PvE, as involving NPCs “makes things a lot harder.” The No Return mode added to the remastered version would have been an ideal candidate for a PvE mod. Footage of the mod in action can be seen below.

The project had attracted attention from fans, particularly because it aimed to bring a multiplayer experience to The Last of Us Part 2, something developer Naughty Dog had originally planned to include in the game. The studio later worked on a dedicated The Last of Us Online game before announcing in December, 2023, that it had made the difficult decision to stop development. According to Naughty Dog, continuing with the project would have required significant post-launch support and would have affected its ability to focus on future single-player games.

In development since January, 2026, the mod was nearing its planned release later this month before the request from Sony Interactive Entertainment brought it to an end. The modder expressed disappointment over the cancellation, saying it was “Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day.” However, they also said that they intend to move forward with a new project that will be their own original work.

The Last of Us Part 2 is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.
