The developer commentary featured in Sony Interactive Entertainment and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has revealed the game’s original ending.
As per game director Neil Druckmann’s commentary in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, the game’s original ending had Ellie kill Abby in the closing fight sequence.
Based on the original vision for The Last of Us Part 2’s ending, Abby was originally intended to die, as Ellie drowns her in the water. However, Druckmann admitted during his commentary in the remastered PS5 version that Joel wouldn’t have wanted Ellie to kill Abby. He had taken a lot of innocent lives, and knew his death was inevitable sooner or later. Ellie killing Abby would only turn her into a monster.
The Last of Us Part II is set five years after The Last of Us (2013) and follows two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States: Ellie, seeking revenge for a murder, and Abby, a soldier caught in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult. The game is played from the third-person perspective, requiring players to combat human foes and zombie-like creatures using firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth. Players experience an action-adventure game from a third-person perspective with elements of survival horror. Traversing post-apocalyptic settings like buildings and forests is crucial for advancing the story. Players can use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and infected creatures affected by a mutated Cordyceps fungus.
The PS5 remaster offers a roguelike survival mode called No Return, with randomized encounters and a variety of playable characters, each with unique traits. It also offers visual enhancements, higher performance for those playing on 120Hz displays, a guitar free play mode, lost levels, director’s commentary, enhanced graphics, improved load times, Dualsense controller support, additional accessibility options, a speed run mode, as well as unlockable skins for both Ellie and Abby.
