Xbox Reportedly Pitches Halo And Elder Scrolls To Hollywood

Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly pitching Hollywood studios on a major package of more than a dozen video game properties for film and television adaptations. According to a report from PuckNews, Netflix, Paramount and Universal are among the companies that have shown interest in the proposed Xbox Hollywood deal.

The report claims Microsoft is seeking a bulk agreement that would give one studio or streaming service access to a collection of Xbox-owned intellectual properties. Halo, World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls and Diablo are among the franchises reportedly included in the package.

Microsoft is said to be seeking more than $300 million for a long-term deal. The asking price has reportedly caused at least one potential partner to hesitate. Microsoft declined to comment, while Netflix, Paramount and Universal also declined to comment on the reported discussions.

Xbox’s library has expanded significantly since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard in 2023. While several properties already have film and television projects in development, a large portion of the company’s intellectual property has yet to receive a Hollywood adaptation.

Several major Xbox properties already have multimedia projects. Minecraft has been adapted for the big screen through Warner Bros. and Legendary, while Fallout has become a successful television series on Amazon. Paramount previously produced two seasons of the Halo series, although its rights have since returned to Xbox.

Netflix is also developing a Gears of War film and an animated Minecraft series. Other projects in the pipeline include a Sea of Thieves movie, an unannounced Wolfenstein television project and a live-action Call of Duty film from Paramount.

The reported push comes as Xbox continues dealing with significant restructuring. Microsoft cut 3,200 jobs from the division in July, representing around 20% of its workforce, according to the report.

The growing number of Xbox adaptations has also demonstrated the commercial potential of Microsoft’s game properties outside gaming. Fallout has driven renewed interest in its games, while A Minecraft Movie became a major theatrical success. The Halo series also attracted substantial viewership on Paramount+, despite its mixed reception among fans.
