IO Interactive has shared new technical details about how 007 First Light takes advantage of PlayStation 5 Pro hardware, with the studio confirming that the game will use Sony’s upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology by default on the console.
According to the developer, the enhanced version of PSSR delivers noticeable improvements to image quality throughout Bond’s upcoming origin story, particularly in scenes featuring dense environments, fast movement, and detailed character models. IO Interactive described the machine learning-based upscaling technology as providing a sharper and more stable image reconstructed from a lower internal resolution.
The studio said upgraded PSSR significantly reduces visual issues such as shimmering, flickering, and image noise, especially in scenes with heavy geometric detail and complex environmental assets. IO Interactive noted that the improvements are especially visible in outdoor areas filled with foliage and during cinematic close-up shots featuring character models and clothing details.
Motion clarity was another major focus highlighted by the developer. According to IO Interactive, upgraded PSSR improves temporal stability during movement, helping preserve object definition while sprinting through environments or during fast camera movement. The studio also pointed to improved reconstruction of hair, fabrics, and other fine visual elements that are traditionally difficult for upscaling technologies to handle cleanly.
Henrik Schlichter, Technical Director at IO Interactive, said the upgraded version of PSSR delivered “a meaningful jump in image quality across the board,” adding that the game appeared cleaner, sharper, and more stable with the technology enabled.
The developer also praised the implementation process, stating that integration of the upgraded upscaler required very little development time. Principal Render Engineer Jon Rocatis said the feature was integrated in roughly a day and worked effectively across the entire game without requiring scene-by-scene adjustments or specialized tuning.
IO Interactive confirmed that upgraded PSSR will be enabled by default for PlayStation 5 Pro players when 007 First Light launches. On other platforms, the studio will continue using AMD’s FSR 3.1.5 upscaling solution.
The developer added that it plans to continue exploring additional image quality improvements as PlayStation 5 Pro tools and technology evolve further.
