Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a new sensation among the fans as it debuts to a franchise record, and also tops out Aquaman in its debut week, which is unprecedented for an animated movie from Japan.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly opened earlier in the week and made approximately $7 and $3.3 million in its two weekdays. It followed it up with a weekend debut north of $10.6 million which puts the overall box office so far at $21 million. This is amazing due to different reasons but let’s state some facts first.
Dragon Ball has received its Hollywood live-action adaptation in 2009. It was a terrible movie, but this is not the point of this comparison. This movie made under $10 million during the lifetime of its box office run. Dragon Ball Super: Broly has already passed this box office and will likely end up getting closer to $30 million by the end of its run.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly is also an extremely limited release, so this result is even more impressive in hindsight. It opened to just under 500 theatres all over the United States compared to the more than 2000 theatres for Dragonball Evolution.
Moving on, Dragon Ball Super: Broly has made more than all of the previous animated Dragon Ball theatrical releases, combined! Yes, it already passed the cumulative box office of Dragon Ball Z: Ressurection ‘F’ and its predecessor Battle of Gods. This is an impressive result no matter how we take a look at it.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly’s impressive opening numbers this week means that Aquaman, which is still having solid legs, had to settle on the fourth position with just under $300K gross from the third position taken by Dragon Ball Super: Broly. On the other hand, Aquaman has now passed $300 million domestically, so there is a reason to celebrate for it as well.
