Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water PS4 vs. PS5 Comparison: Is It Worth The Upgrade?

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is available for both PS4 and PS5. The native PS5 version offers better performance but are the visuals improved?

Koei Tecmo has brought back the original Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water from the Nintendo Wii U to additional platforms including the PS4 and PS5. The question though, is what is the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions?

Visually, you won’t get out much between the two different platforms. They are nigh identical, save for a slightly higher resolution on the PS4. Although to me, it doesn’t look like native 4K at all because you can still notice a lot of aliasing and shimmering around the edges.

The performance though is a big improvement. It can be seen in camera movements and during gameplay. PS5 version runs at 60 FPS while the PS4 version is just 30 FPS. You feel like the character is not dragging their feet around and the experience with the exploration is smoother as a result.

As for the load times, honestly, PS5 is faster but I don’t think the game has super long load times. One of the cool additions though is the use of the Gyro in the controller to simulate the Camera Obscura and you get this for both the PS4 and PS5.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is available now for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, and Nintendo Switch. If you enjoy our content, don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel.
