Monster Hunter Stories 2 Has The Best JRPG Debut On Steam

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin had the best debut for a JRPG on Steam surpassing Final Fantasy XV and Persona 4 Golden.

Capcom’s bet to release MHS 2 on the same day as the Nintendo Switch release has paid off in a big way with the game debuting with a peak of more than 30K concurrent users. This is higher than any JRPG that has launched on Steam including Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XV and Sega’s Persona 4 Golden.

This number is notable because both Persona 4 Golden and Final Fantasy XV have sold more than one million copies on Steam alone, so if Monster Hunter Stories 2 can open that well, the game may also show similar momentum. It has received a great critical reception with most reviews praising it.

The game already has more than 2K reviews on Steam and retains a “Mostly Positive” average. This bodes well for the future of the game as well.

In the weekly Top Sellers on Steam, the game had a debut behind PUBG and Sea of Thieves, two live-service games that continue to get post-launch updates leading to a stable userbase. The pre-launch edition ranked at the third position in the top 10 best-sellers list while the post-launch edition ranked 9th. There is also a Deluxe Edition but that didn’t make the cut here. It is also mostly cosmetics so fans likely opted to get the standard version.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is available for the PC and Nintendo Switch. The game was developed and published by Capcom.
