Sony has shared an updated sales figure on the PS5 confirming that it has shipped 7.8 million units beating the sales record set by the PS4.
In their latest earnings report, Sony confirmed that a further 3.3 million units of the console were shipped worldwide bringing the overall number to 7.8 million, which is an increase of 200K from the 7.6 million figure posted by the PS4. This accounts for launch-aligned numbers for both consoles.
PlayStation 5 continues to face stock shortages worldwide due to various factors pertaining to the global pandemic and manufacturing issues. Despite the stock issues, it has managed to do well and it is on pace to outsell the PS5 in its launch year.
The other update provided by Sony was related to the PS4. While sales of the PS4 are slowing down, it is still down well. For the year ending March 31, 2021, Sony has shipped a total of 5.7 million PS4 worldwide. This brings the overall number of shipments to 116 million, which makes it the second best-selling console of all time behind the PlayStation 2.
It will be hard for the PS4 to hit the sales milestone set by the PS2, which is just near 150 million sales worldwide, but there is still plenty of life left in the console and it can put some further numbers as there are games still launching for the console including the hotly anticipated Horizon Forbidden West, which is due out later this year.
