The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes PS4 vs. PS5 comparison outlines the difference between the two consoles. Is the upgrade worth it for PS5?

House of Ashes is the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology that natively supports the PS5. It is an interesting test of the Supermassive engine that has been used to develop The Dark Pictures anthology. The first difference that is seen right from the beginning is that the game support 60 FPS on PS5.

While there is support for 60 FPS, it is offered in a different mode, Performance, compared to the default Quality mode that sticks to 30 FPS. Although, I’d argue a 60 FPS mode wasn’t really essential for The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes since it is mostly a cinematic game.

How Is House of Ashes On PS4 vs. PS5?

The game runs at 4K resolution on both the PS5 and PS4. The difference is in the visuals. Texture quality, lighting, shadows, and almost every other aspect have been toned down. The performance of the game is somewhere in the middle with an unlocked frame rate compared to the locked 30 FPS quality mode for PS5, or 60 FPS performance mode.

Another thing that is noticeable is the super-fast loading time on the PS5. The game loads near instantly on the PS5 compared to the PS4. You don’t even get a loading screen unlike the PS4 version, which can start loading after certain cutscenes.

Lastly, texture streaming can also be a problem because sometimes it takes a while for the textures to load. There is no such problem with the PS5.

The video comparison highlights the difference clearly with the lighting being retouched, visual effects like textures toned down, and so on. You can still get a pretty good experience out of the game no matter if you play it on a PS4 or PS5.
