Game Science co-founder and Black Myth series art director Yang Qi has addressed whether artificial intelligence could accelerate development of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, suggesting that the team is not looking to rely heavily on AI during the game’s design and asset creation stages.
Yang responded to a question from a netizen on Weibo in the early hours of August 10. Asked how much faster the development of Black Myth: Zhong Kui could become with current AI technology, Yang explained that the game’s design and asset production would remain largely separate from generative AI.
“The design and asset stages will be far removed from AIGC, not out of resistance, but simply to do our best in the final stage?” Yang wrote.
Yang then referenced director Christopher Nolan while explaining his broader approach to technology and development. He had recently praised Nolan’s The Odyssey on Weibo, describing it as “the standard answer to epic films” and saying he was “deeply inspired.”
“In today’s world where digital cinema and 3D post-production seem to have reached a dead end, Nolan is still shining brightly, stirring up a storm with older technologies… There’s no such thing as a last train that you absolutely have to catch. You can find a small hotel to stay in, and there’s plenty of time for AI and stuff, no rush,” Yang said.
His comments indicate that Game Science does not currently see the rapid adoption of AI as something it needs to pursue simply to speed up production. Instead, the studio appears willing to continue using established methods for the design and asset stages of Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui is the upcoming second major entry in the Black Myth series following Black Myth: Wukong. Game Science is developing and publishing the single-player action RPG for PC and major home consoles, although an official release date has not yet been announced.
The game will centre on Zhong Kui, the traditional Chinese demon-hunting deity, as he crosses between the mortal world and the underworld while confronting supernatural threats. Players will take control of the titular ghost catcher in a story focused on themes surrounding life and death.
