Square Enix has reported a strong first quarter for the fiscal year ending March 2027, with its games business driving much of the company’s growth. Net sales reached 78.4 billion yen for the three months ended June 30, an increase of 32.3% year over year, while operating income rose 88.6% to 17.0 billion yen and net profit increased 175.7% to 13.2 billion yen.
The company’s Digital Entertainment division was the main contributor to the improvement. Revenue from the division reached 49.96 billion yen, up 51.8% compared with the same period last year, while operating income increased 91.8% to 15.58 billion yen.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was among the main new releases supporting the HD Games business during the quarter. The game expanded to Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S, and Windows, giving Square Enix access to additional platforms. The company also highlighted The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales as another new release contributing to the division’s improved performance.
Square Enix has not disclosed individual sales figures for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, meaning its exact contribution to the 49.96 billion yen generated by Digital Entertainment cannot be determined. However, the company’s comments indicate that the game’s expanded platform availability played an important role in the quarter.
Final Fantasy Continues To Perform Across Multiple Businesses
Final Fantasy XIV also recorded higher sales compared with the same period last year. Square Enix attributed the increase partly to stronger player activity following the announcement of the MMO’s next expansion.
Profit growth for Final Fantasy XIV was more limited, however, as Square Enix has already begun recording expenses related to the expansion, which is scheduled for early 2027.
The results show how Final Fantasy continues to generate revenue through different parts of Square Enix’s business. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is contributing as a premium game release across additional platforms, while Final Fantasy XIV continues to provide recurring revenue through its established player base.
Dragon Quest And Dissidia Add To Growth
Square Enix’s mobile and PC browser games business also recorded higher sales and profits during the quarter. The company specifically credited DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY and DRAGON QUEST Smash/Grow for contributing to the improvement.
Individual revenue figures for either title were not provided, so their precise financial contribution cannot be established from the earnings report. Their performance nevertheless gives Square Enix another source of growth beyond its traditional console and PC releases.
Other parts of the company also recorded year-over-year growth. Publication revenue increased 11.0%, amusement revenue rose 3.8%, and merchandising revenue climbed 22.3% to 4.61 billion yen, with new products based on Square Enix’s existing intellectual properties contributing to the latter.
Square Enix Maintains Full-Year Forecast
Despite the strong start, Square Enix has left its existing forecast for the full fiscal year unchanged. The company continues to expect 298.0 billion yen in annual net sales, 49.0 billion yen in operating income and 31.0 billion yen in profit attributable to owners of the parent.
The first-quarter results suggest that Square Enix’s recent performance is being supported by a combination of new releases, additional platforms and established franchises. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was a major contributor among the HD games, while Final Fantasy XIV, DISSIDIA DUELLUM FINAL FANTASY and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow show how the company’s biggest franchises continue to generate revenue across different business models.
