Marvel Studios has officially announced Black Panther 3, with Ryan Coogler returning to write and direct the next chapter in the franchise. The film is set to premiere exclusively in cinemas on December 15, 2028, and will introduce David Jonsson as the new Black Panther.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Coogler appeared on stage alongside Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, and Winston Duke, who reprises his role as M’Baku, before revealing Jonsson as the film’s new lead.
Coogler confirmed that Jonsson will portray the grown-up son of T’Challa, the character originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman. Reflecting on the previous film, Coogler said the sequel introduced T’Challa’s son, and the third instalment will follow the character as he comes of age.
Jonsson received a standing ovation after taking the stage and thanked Coogler, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and the cast and crew. He said he was honoured to join the franchise and added that he preferred to let his performance speak for itself.
Coogler directed the original Black Panther, released in 2018, before returning for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022, which shifted its focus to Shuri following Boseman’s passing. In addition to the films, Coogler has also served as a producer on Marvel’s Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda, both released on Disney+.
Black Panther 3 is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 15, 2028.
