New gameplay details regarding Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bungie’s sci-fi PvP shooter, Marathon, have been revealed.
Based on the information shared in a ViDoc, Marathon is a PvP-focused extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV. The game will see players inhabit the bodies of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who have been designed to survive the planet’s harsh environments.
Runners will be tasked to explore the lost colony that once inhabited Tau Ceti’s surface. Players in Marthon will engage solo or in crews of three, searching for mysterious alien artifacts, as well as for valuable loot, new weapons and gear that they can find and add to their collection.
Players will drop into persistent zones, and their subsequent actions can have consequences for the whole game and community. According to Bungie, Marathon will feature plenty of variety in terms of gameplay. The game will support cross-play, cross-save, and dedicated servers across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
According to Bungie, with Marathon, one of the areas that is a big focus for the development team is its player-based storytelling. The original Marathon games from 1994 revealed story moments through terminals, all in text. With the technology of today, there are so many more ways to immerse players in the world, both in and out of game. The studio will be carrying that through in the design of this game.
Marathon won’t feature a single-player campaign. Instead, with the PvP experience at the foundation, Bungie is creating opportunities for player-driven stories that are integrated with the overarching game narrative. The studio is building a world full of persistent, evolving zones, where players create their own journey with every run they take. That might mean an unforgettable firefight against another crew vying for the same loot, or a last-second extraction while beset on all sides.
