Danganronpa 2×2 Delayed To Early 2027 As Spike Chunsoft Unveils Slayhem Mode

by Greg Martin

Spike Chunsoft has confirmed that Danganronpa 2×2 will now launch in North America and Europe in early 2027, while also revealing new gameplay details, including the game’s alternate story mode, a redesigned world map and updated character artwork.

The publisher said development had originally been targeting a 2026 release but that the launch has been pushed back to give the team more time to deliver the best possible experience. A more specific release date will be announced at a later stage.

Alongside the delay, Spike Chunsoft offered a closer look at Slayhem mode, a new way to experience Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. From the beginning of the game, players will be able to choose between two separate modes.

Original mode retells the story from the 2012 release with updated visuals and presentation designed for modern platforms. Slayhem mode, however, introduces an entirely different scenario based on the same game. A key incident changes the course of the story, leading to alternate victims, different culprits and new murder mysteries for players to solve.

According to Spike Chunsoft, Slayhem mode contains around 20% more content than Original mode, offering returning fans a fresh take on the story rather than simply recreating the original adventure.

The publisher also detailed a significant overhaul to the game’s World Map. Instead of the side-scrolling map featured in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Danganronpa 2×2 introduces a fully 3D map that provides a clearer view of the island setting.

Players will be free to explore the island on foot or instantly travel to previously visited locations. The new first-person perspective is also intended to better showcase the tropical atmosphere of the game’s setting.

In addition, Danganronpa 2×2 will feature newly illustrated character portraits, with Spike Chunsoft sharing a selection of the updated artwork alongside the announcement.

Producer Shohei Sakakibara addressed fans in a message accompanying the announcement, explaining that while development had been progressing towards a 2026 release, the team had decided to postpone the game until early 2027. He thanked players for their continued support and patience, adding that more updates, including the final release date, will be shared in the future.

Danganronpa 2×2 is currently in development for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The game is scheduled to launch in North America and Europe in early 2027.
