DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations DLC Adds Story Campaign, Endgame Content, and Chain Spear

by Greg Martin

Bethesda and id Software have shared new details on DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations, the game’s first major expansion, which launches on July 7 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC with Xbox Play Anywhere support.

The expansion adds between 10 and 12 hours of new content, combining a story campaign with fresh endgame challenges, new arenas and additional content for the Ripatorium. According to Game Director and id Software Studio Co-Director Hugo Martin, Revelations expands on the heavier combat style introduced in DOOM: The Dark Ages by introducing greater mobility without abandoning the game’s emphasis on aggressive, close-range encounters.

At the centre of the expansion is the Chain Spear, a new weapon that temporarily replaces the Slayer’s shield early in the campaign after it is destroyed. As players progress, they will eventually be able to switch freely between the shield and the spear, with some late-game upgrades rewarding players who alternate between the two during combat.

The Chain Spear introduces a range of offensive and traversal abilities. Players can use it for close-range thrusts, powerful slam attacks, wide sweeping strikes that destroy armour and parry incoming attacks, or throw it at enemies from long range. Each of these abilities can be enhanced through its own dedicated skill tree.

The new weapon also significantly changes movement. Its grappling function allows the Slayer to launch towards enemies or pull himself across the battlefield, while a new Orbit ability lets players circle airborne enemies while remaining tethered to them, firing weapons throughout the manoeuvre.

Martin described the expansion as the culmination of decades of DOOM gameplay design, combining the weightier combat of The Dark Ages with faster movement options reminiscent of previous entries.

Beyond the campaign, Revelations introduces a substantial amount of endgame content. Players will be able to revisit campaign levels with additional objectives, puzzles and tougher encounters, while a large explorable hub hides secrets inspired by classic DOOM levels recreated using modern visuals.

The expansion also includes an ultimate boss encounter and new Master Arenas designed to test mastery of the Slayer’s full arsenal, including both the shield and the Chain Spear. All of the game’s existing difficulty customisation options remain available, allowing players to tailor the experience regardless of skill level.
