Square Enix has announced that the free subscription period for Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 will end on September 7 at 11:59 p.m. in each region. Starting September 8, players who have registered the Starter Edition or Complete Edition will receive the standard 30-day free play period before a subscription becomes necessary.
Players using the Free Trial will not be affected by the change and can continue playing without paying a subscription fee.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version requires its own subscription, even if a player already pays for Final Fantasy XIV on another platform. However, players with an active subscription elsewhere can purchase their Nintendo Switch 2 subscription at half price through the Nintendo Switch 2 Subscription Discount. This discount cannot be used while the 30-day free play period is active on another platform.
Subscriptions and other paid services on Nintendo Switch 2 will use FFXIV Coins, which can be purchased through the Nintendo eShop. The coins can then be spent through the Mog Station for subscription fees and account services, as well as the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store for optional items.
Square Enix has also confirmed that a known issue currently prevents the Nintendo Switch 2 launcher from opening the FFXIV Coins purchase screen in the eShop. This is scheduled to be fixed with Patch 7.56 on September 8. Until then, players can purchase the coins by opening the Nintendo Switch 2 HOME menu, selecting Final Fantasy XIV, choosing Software Information, then Nintendo eShop and In-Game Items.
Players will need both a Square Enix account and a Nintendo account to use the Switch 2 version. Existing players who want to continue with their current characters must select the same service account they already use when registering the Switch 2 licence. Choosing to create a new service account will prevent access to their existing character.
There is also no requirement for a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play Final Fantasy XIV Online on Switch 2. However, members will receive an additional perk in the form of one extra aetheryte that can be registered as a free teleport destination.
Subscription payments are set to renew automatically each month as long as the player’s FFXIV Coins balance is sufficient. If there are not enough coins available, automatic renewal will stop and the subscription will need to be renewed manually.
Square Enix has also warned that settings such as hotbars and macros are stored locally and are not automatically transferred between platforms. Players moving an existing character to Switch 2 can use Final Fantasy XIV’s server backup features to upload their settings from another platform and download them on the new console.
